Delegation of an existing gov.uk subdomain

This runbook covers the process for delegation of an existing gov.uk subdomain. These domains are typically managed via BT DNS.

Pre-requisites

  • Request meets rules around delegation
  • New hosting provider has replicated existing DNS configuration.
  • Notify Security of proposed changes so that they can approve temporery registry lock removal.

Submit delgation request to BT

  1. Login to the BT DNS Portal

  2. Find the domain on the Your domains tab.

  3. Click on the Actions button and select Edit domain.

  4. Add new NS Record values and save by clicking the Add to basket button.

  5. Go to the basket and click on the Place Order button.

  6. You will receive an order confirmation email.

  7. Next BT will contact the Registry Lock contact via email (copy will be sent to Domains mailbox) to request approval for temporerily removal of the lock so that NS Records can be changed.

  8. BT will confirm when DNS changes have been completed.

  9. Notify Requester that changes have been made, and to allow old NS Record TTL to expire to allow for full propogation.

BT has a 5 day SLA for requests so allow enough time for delegation to take place.

After delegation has fully propogated (depending on length of existing NS Record TTL) there may be the need to remove the existing hostedzone from DNS and delete the old Hostedzone.
